Perema, Goddess of Protection, Guardianship, and Courage, came into the world in the Dwarven mountain keep of Galemoor. Her mother was Durgana, a warrior-smith and captain of the city guard whose stern courage was matched only by her fierce tenderness toward children, strays, and the vulnerable.

A Birth in the Mountain Keep

Galemoor was a place of hard lessons. Its people understood rockslides, raids, winter hunger, and the cost of an unguarded gate. Perema was born into this world of vigilance, and from the very beginning, she seemed to be created to stand between danger and those who could not withstand it.

No mortal siblings of Perema are named in the surviving lore, though the Chronicle of the Ages preserves stories of cousins and young companions who grew beneath her protection. Her relationship with Durgana shaped her earliest understanding of strength and responsibility.

The Stone-Willed Child

Perema’s childhood was marked by extraordinary fortitude. One famous tale claims she grasped a red-hot coal without complaint. By ten, she had broken up a brawl among drunken guards; by twelve, she had saved two cousins from a rockslide. She became a fixture on the battlements, a stalwart guard against any threat that may come.

Her presence inspired confidence. Companions loved her fiercely, watch-brothers trusted her, and younger Dwarves crowded near her in moments of danger. Yet Perema’s early life also revealed the danger of relying too completely on a protector. When people stood near her, they felt invulnerable. Some began to neglect their own training, forgetting that courage cannot be borrowed forever.

The Bear & the Agate

Perema chose the Bear as her divine symbol. The bear represents strength, endurance, protection, and the ferocity required to defend what is sacred. Yet it is also a creature of shelter and guardianship, one that protects its young with unwavering resolve. This dual meaning suited Perema perfectly.

Her sacred gemstone is Agate, a stone of stability, grounding, and layered strength. Followers of Perema often carry agate into battle, but also into childbirth, dangerous travel, and difficult negotiations. It is not simply a warrior’s stone. It is a guardian’s stone, meant to remind the bearer that strength must be steady before it is forceful.

Code of the Shield

Perema’s philosophy is preserved in the Code of the Shield. She taught that true strength is not domination, intimidation, or conquest. True strength is the willingness to place oneself between harm and the vulnerable without seeking ownership over those protected.

She warned that guardianship must never become control. A shield shelters; it does not imprison.

Though Perema no longer keeps watch on the battlements of Galemoor, her legacy endures in every sentinel order, every sworn protector, and every ordinary person who chooses to stand firm for another. In the current Age of Heroes, she is honored not only by warriors, but by healers, parents, guides, and defenders of the helpless. Her teaching remains simple and demanding: power is justified only when it protects life, dignity, and freedom.
